More than a shop
Blockley is a village situated in the North Cotswolds with a population of just over 2000 people. Fifty years ago the village had 22 shops and banks, which have all been converted to residential use. The last remaining shop, which also housed the post office, closed in 2008.
In 2007, the Blockley Save Our Shop Committee launched a long-term plan for a community-owned combined general store/coffee shop/post office, which operated from rented premises from 2008-2014. The Blockley Village Shop & Cafe is owned by the Blockley Cooperative Association, which has 650+ members, and is run by the paid manager and staff, with the back up of volunteer-run Management Committee.
The new Shop, Café and Community Hub was opened in October 2014 when the lease on the Old Coach House expired. The community fought a long battle for planning permission and the new build was funded with the help of the Big Lottery Fund, the Social Investment Business, and the local community.
The new building, which is located in the heart of the village, is the realisation of a hard-fought goal to preserve essential retail and social services for the community in a location owned by the villagers.
