The WI Centenary Baton Relay

by Pam Merritt |Published in: Cafe Hub

On the morning of March 19 the Shop & Cafe hosted an exotic event featuring a fire engine with a full complement of ladies in 1915 costumes, a Watsonian motorbike and sidecar carrying Sheila Weir, former WI President, wearing period costume including goggles and her mother's high heels, and a bewildered group of nursery school children.

The Moreton fire engine ensemble delivered a baton, which will be relayed to WI groups all over the country, using all manner of transport, until June. As the members of the WI sang Jerusalem, spectators enjoyed slices of a wonderful cake depicting the scene, prepared for the occasion by Corrin Green. As a final treat, the children from the Blockley Nursery School took turns to sit in the cab of the fire engine.
