THE FUTURE

Blockley Village Shop and Café

::May/June 2012::

Dear All,

The shop committee meeting last night heard that we have now raised £90,000 towards our target of £100,000, (taking account of the cost of the wine and coffees in the promotional offers). This is brilliant news and a wonderful achievement.

Let's see if we can make the final push to our target during the Jubilee celebrations. The shop is in the heart of the village where the Big Lunch, the crowning of the Queen, the Street Fair, and many other festivities will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend. We will have extended opening hours and hope to see business booming over this period and into the holiday season.

Sales have been a bit flat over the past weeks of gloomy weather so now that the sun has at last come out, please make the effort to use your local shop whenever you can. We need to prove to the Big Lottery and other potential donors that we are still willing to put our hands in our pockets.

More good news

After long negotiations, the Cotswold District Council has at last issued a licence for us to run a Village Lottery in aid of the shop. The first draw will take place in July. More details will follow when we have the equipment.

Reminder about High Street parking

This weekend residents of the High Street will receive a notice warning them that the road will be closed for the  Fancy Dress Parade on Monday, June 4. Car owners are asked to move their vehicles to the green at the top of Chapel Lane/Bell Bank so that the procession can be enjoyed by everyone.

All the best

Pam

Blockley Village Shop and Café is a community-owned venture, which was set up in 2008 when the villagers learned that their last remaining shop and post office was about to close.

After looking at all available options the community decided to form a co-operative and open a shop and café in the historic Old Coach House in the centre of the village.

Over £84,000 was quickly raised through membership subscriptions, donations, grants and a loan. In April 2008 the premises were refitted by volunteers, with the support local firms including builders, designers, engineers and IT specialists. The shop opening was celebrated with a May Day fete and concert, which attracted a large crowd from Blockley as well as visitors from the surrounding area.

The Blockley Co-operative Association now has over 580 members and employs a manager and 17 part-time staff.
