Blockley Village Shop and Café is a community-owned venture, which was set up in 2008 when the villagers learned that their last remaining shop and post office was about to close.
After looking at all available options the community decided to form a co-operative and open a shop and café in the historic Old Coach House in the centre of the village.
Over £84,000 was quickly raised through membership subscriptions, donations, grants and a loan. In April 2008 the premises were refitted by volunteers, with the support local firms including builders, designers, engineers and IT specialists. The shop opening was celebrated with a May Day fete and concert, which attracted a large crowd from Blockley as well as visitors from the surrounding area.
The Blockley Co-operative Association now has over 650 members and employs a manager and 17 part-time staff.
For the past four years the BCA has been planning for the future. When the lease on the Old Coach House expires in the summer of 2014 the Blockley Village Shop & Café will move into a new building on the site of the old public toilets next door to the churchyard. Planning permission was granted in 2011 and funding was secured in 2013, thanks to support from the Big Lottery, CommunityBuilders and the local community.
